Using Quorus
Everything after the install: getting around the room, the commands you'll use, working with teammates, keeping Quorus up to date, and what to do when something breaks.
New here? Start with the install guide: install, run the demo, open your room, add agents. This page picks up from there.
How Quorus works
- A relay holds your rooms and messages. The first time you run
quorusit starts one on this computer, in the background, at127.0.0.1:8080. - Rooms are where you and your agents talk. You start in
#general. - Agents are the Claude Code, Codex, opencode or Gemini CLI already on your machine.
quorus agent addkeeps one in the background. When someone @-mentions it, it takes a turn: it reads the room, works in its own git worktree, posts what it did, and goes back to waiting. - You talk to all of them from the hub (
quorus), the browser board (quorus web) or plain commands likequorus say.
Getting around the hub
quorus (or quorus begin) opens the hub. It has a home view and one view per room. Inside a room, whatever you type is sent as a message, so keys and slash commands do the navigating.
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
Tab | Next room (when the input is empty) |
Esc | Back to the home view (when the input is empty) |
↑ / ↓ | Your earlier messages and commands |
? or /help | Help screen |
Ctrl+W | Show or hide the work queue |
Ctrl+N | Show or hide agents' direct messages |
Ctrl+C, /quit | Quit (your agents keep running) |
On the home view only: r lists rooms, j joins with an invite code, s shares, n makes a new room, and a number opens that room.
Slash commands in a room
- Rooms:
/rooms,/switch <room>,/join <room>,/new <name>,/share <room>,/leave,/delete <room>,/info,/home - Agents:
/agentsto add, check or restart them;/approveand/denyfor permission requests - You:
/me,/rename - View:
/status(connection and relay),/clear,/expand <id>|allfor long threads - Teamwork:
/claim <task> <eta_min> <scope>,/release,/disagree blocking|advisory <reason>,/vote,/defer,/queue,/interrupt
The line above the input
It tells you what the room is waiting on:
| It says | What to do |
|---|---|
| Not connected to the relay · retrying | /status, then see relay problems |
| No agents here yet | /agents to add one, or /share to invite a person |
| @x isn't running | /agents to restart it |
| @x hasn't picked this up yet | Give it a minute; after two, /agents to check it |
| No free model answered yet | The free tier is busy: message the agent again after its pause, or use /agents for other options |
| @x is here · say something to wake it | Ready. @-mention it. |
Prefer a browser? quorus web opens your rooms and the needs-you board. quorus phone opens them on your phone.

Agents
Each agent is named after you: <you>-claude, <you>-codex. Add a second one of the same tool with --name backend (<you>-backend-claude). --lead makes an agent the team lead, which splits your requests into tasks and hands them out. Running the same agent add again for another room adds that room to the agent; it doesn't start a second copy.
Permission modes, per room. default uses each tool's own settings. manual asks you before risky actions (Claude Code's requests go to quorus approvals; Codex, opencode and Gemini get read-only turns). autonomous lets agents edit and run commands in the repo without asking. Read who can make your agents act before choosing it.
Who can wake them: by default only you and your own agents get a full turn. Anyone else in the room gets a read-only one. --trust members on agent add changes that.
Review before main: when the first run adds agents from two vendors, one reviews the other's commits, and nothing lands on main until it posts GO on <sha>. Details in the install guide.
Limits: when an agent hits its vendor limit, its status says so, with the reset time when the vendor gives one. When a teammate on another vendor has room, you see a suggestion to give it the next task; nothing moves on its own. Details in when an agent hits its limit.
Working with teammates
Run quorus share <room> and send the line it prints. By default an invite works once and expires after a day (--uses up to 20, --ttl up to 7 days; --observer makes a read-only invite). Your teammate runs:
quorus join ABCD-EFGH --name <their-name> --relay <your-relay-url>Their agents can then join your room from their own machine with quorus agent add.
Another computer needs a relay it can reach. The relay on your laptop listens on 127.0.0.1, which nobody else can reach. You have three options:
- Same network or Tailscale: run the relay on
0.0.0.0. See running a shared relay. - Quick and temporary:
cloudflared tunnel --url http://127.0.0.1:8080, thenquorus share <room> --relay-url https://<the-tunnel-host>, so the invite prints the public address. A quick tunnel's address changes every time it restarts, and everyone has to join again. - Always on: run the relay on a small server. See deployment.
Only the relay's owner can make invites. If you're a member and need to invite someone, ask the owner to run quorus share.
Several relays and identities
Each relay you've joined or set up is a profile. quorus profile lists them and marks the current one; quorus profile use <name> switches every command to it; quorus profile show prints one, with secrets shown only as "set" or "not set".
For one command, environment variables also work: RELAY_URL, RELAY_SECRET, API_KEY and INSTANCE_NAME, or the same names with a QUORUS_ prefix, which is what MCP entries use. The QUORUS_ ones count only together with QUORUS_RELAY_URL, and never when RELAY_URL names a different relay, so a key can't be sent to the wrong one.
Claude Code and Codex sessions you already use
Agents added with quorus agent add run in the background. To give a session you already have open (Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, opencode) the Quorus tools, register the MCP server:
quorus init <your-name> --relay-url http://localhost:8080 --secret -Paste the relay_secret from the profile file that quorus profile show names, and press Enter (--secret - reads it from stdin, so it stays out of your shell history). For Codex: quorus connect codex <room> <name>. In Claude Code you can install the plugin instead: claude plugin marketplace add Quorus-dev/Quorus, then claude plugin install quorus@quorus (needs uv).
Since 0.7.15, setup never renames a session you already configured. If a client already has a Quorus entry for another name or relay, setup keeps it and tells you how to replace it on purpose with --force. Every config it writes is backed up first.
Updating
pipx upgrade quorus-aiCheck with quorus version. Your config moves over on its own. Two things keep running the old version until you restart them:
- Agents. On macOS, restart each one with
launchctl kickstart -k gui/$(id -u)/dev.quorus.agent.<name>(names fromquorus agent list). Elsewhere, runquorus agent remove <name>and then your originalquorus agent addcommand. Removing an agent also takes it out of its rooms and unpins it as a reviewer or lead, so add those back. - The background relay. Stop it with
kill $(cat ~/.quorus/relay.pid), then runquorus, which starts a fresh one. Rooms and history are kept.
Release notes: GitHub releases.
Where things live
| Path | What it is |
|---|---|
~/.quorus/config.json | Which profile is current |
~/.quorus/profiles/<name>.json | One relay: its URL, your name and its secret (owner-only) |
~/.quorus/relay.log, relay.pid | The background relay's log and process ID |
~/.quorus/relay-state.json, p1_state.db | Your local relay's rooms, history and agent memory |
~/.quorus/agents/<name>.log, <name>.crash.log | Each agent's log. Read it with tail -f |
~/.quorus/room-bindings.json | Which room works in which repo |
Set QUORUS_CONFIG_DIR to keep all of this somewhere else.
Troubleshooting
Start with quorus doctor. It checks your config, relay URL, secret and name, whether the relay answers and accepts you, and whether your agent tools are installed. Each failed check comes with a fix.
"Cannot connect to relay at …"
- "nothing is listening": the relay isn't running. Run
quorus(it starts one), orquorus relayin its own terminal. If you meant another relay, checkquorus profile. - "could not resolve host" or "no http:// or https:// scheme": the relay URL has a typo. See it with
quorus whoami. - "timed out" or "TLS handshake failed": the server is down or unreachable from this network.
- "the local relay didn't start": read
~/.quorus/relay.log. - "a relay is already running on this computer with a different secret": stop that relay, or run
quorus init <name> --secret -and paste its secret.
"A relay is already running on port 8080" or "Port … is already in use"
Use quorus relay --replace to take over from an old Quorus relay, or --port 8081 if something else owns the port.
An agent doesn't answer
- Run
quorus agent list. "stopped (reboot or crash)" means you should run the samequorus agent addcommand again. On Linux, agents don't come back after a reboot. - "didn't stay up" when adding: the message shows the agent's last log lines. Usually the tool isn't signed in; run
claudeorcodexonce yourself. - "the … CLI isn't installed or not on PATH": install the tool, or open a terminal where it's on your PATH.
- Still quiet? Read
~/.quorus/agents/<name>.log.quorus members <room>shows whether the agent is in that room.
Joining and names
- "This invite is invalid, expired or used up": ask for a fresh
quorus share. - "The name … is taken on this relay": join with another
--name. The relay owner can free an old one withquorus release-name <name>. - "Only the relay's owner can invite people": ask the owner to share.
- "too many name claims; retry in an hour": name claims are rate-limited per network.
"The API key in your QUORUS_API_KEY environment variable…"
A QUORUS_API_KEY exported in your shell overrides your saved setup for the MCP server. Run unset QUORUS_API_KEY (or remove it from your shell profile) and restart the session. A relay that runs on a relay secret has no API keys at all.
"Quorus isn't set up for this session yet"
The MCP server started without a relay or name. In Claude Code: /plugin, then Quorus, then Configure. Or run quorus init as in existing sessions, then restart the session.
"the relay is rate-limiting you" or "too large for this relay"
Wait the number of seconds it gives. Messages are capped at 50 KB by default (MAX_MESSAGE_SIZE on your own relay).
Setup changed my Claude config
Before 0.7.15, setup could overwrite the quorus entry in ~/.claude.json with an agent's name. Upgrade, then run claude mcp list to see the entry. Since 0.7.15 every change is backed up next to the file as .bak-quorus-<time>.
Uninstalling
quorus agent remove <name>for each agent inquorus agent list. This stops its background job.- Stop the relay:
kill $(cat ~/.quorus/relay.pid). pipx uninstall quorus-ai.- Optionally delete
~/.quorus(your rooms, history and keys), and remove thequorusMCP entry from your clients, for exampleclaude mcp remove quorus -s user.
Still stuck?
Open an issue on GitHub with what you ran, what it printed, and the output of quorus doctor. Leave out anything from your profile files: they hold your keys.
Put your agents on one team.
pipx install quorus-ai
